Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for reviewing, and underwriting applications for consumer, auto, unsecured, credit card, and overdraft loans. Evaluates direct and indirect loan applications and approving those that are within approved lending limits. Responsible for reviewing documents to ensure that proper underwriting criteria have been provided and are accurate on applications received.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Evaluate and verify direct and indirect loan applications and credit criteria

  • Compute debt ratios and loan terms

  • Determine value of collateral and approve loans within limits of authority and present counter offers if appropriate

  • Document reason for decisions on loan requests

  • Verify employment and income as required

  • Notify originating financial specialist and applicants of decision (responsible for sending adverse action notice as warranted)

  • Approve loans within limits of authority and communicates policy issues or recommendations to Loan Committee for consideration

  • Maintain consistent underwriting methods, and review a sample of declined loans with the Underwriting Manager to ensure that loan decisions align with Credit Union policy. If exceptions are made they are warranted and documented.

  • Ensures lending functions are effectively performed in accordance with established Credit Union policies and with legal and regulatory requirements

  • Ensure decision making skills are appropriate and result in positive results for the Credit Union

  • Provide prompt decisions on loan requests

  • Loan decision times are within set standards

  • Offer alternative solutions to loan requests if applicable (counter offers)

  • Is properly informed of Credit Union loan policies and services

  • Ensure that the Credit Union's quality and professional reputation is projected and maintained

  • Complete reports and records promptly and accurately

  • Keep Management informed of area activities and of any significant problems

  • Required reports are accurate and timely

  • Ensures good working relationships exist with area personnel and with management. Area personnel are assisted as needed.

  • Strive to meet and exceed goals that are set forth by the credit union specifically in the areas of loan growth

  • Stay informed regarding local and national economic conditions and legal and regulatory changes

  • Responsible for related duties as required or assigned

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education/Certification:

  • Associates degree or an additional 2 years work experience may be substituted

 

Required Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of Credit Union services, policies, and procedures

  • Understanding of related legal and regulatory standards, and required loan documentation

  • Knowledge of consumer and residential lending practices

 

Experience Required:

  • Two years underwriting experience preferred but not required

  • Three years’ lending experience required

     

Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent interviewing, communication, and public relations skills

  • Professional appearance and attitude

  • Strong problem solving skills

  • Strong analytical and financial skills

  • Ability to operate related computer applications, and other business equipment including calculators, typewriter, printer, telephone, and notary stamp

  • Good typing skills

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Standard office conditions

  • Rotating Saturday hours may be required

  • Low to moderate noise

  • Limited lifting up to 10 lbs.
